Some FEM DEM formulations to simulate multi fractures in solid

His research interest is focused on numerical methods in rock and soil mechanics, especially on rock fracture and fragmentation simulation by FEM and DEM coupled method.

Abstract

The speaker will introduce three strategies to combine the advantage of FEM and DEM together. The first one is particle contact-based meshfree method (PCMM). In this method, FEM elements will be generated by contact pairs of DEM, and by renewing contact topology in each step, the elements will be created or deleted correspondingly, and then the element distortion problems will be solved automatically. The second one is share-node-based FEM DEM hybrid method. In this method, FEM elements and DEM particles share same nodes, the solution process of FEM and DEM are executed in parallel in each time step, and contribution factor is used to reflect the node force contribution by FEM and DEM. The third one is discrete spring system method. In this method, a discrete spring system equivalent to continuous media is obtained by variational principle, and then an arbitrary direction failure model for discrete springs is used.
